Anton Yelchin's Parents Have Made A Documentary About The Late Actor

Actor Anton Yelchin tragically passed away due to a freak vehicle accident in June of 2016 at the age of 27, just a month before he was seen onscreen as Chekov in Star Trek Beyond. Although he will live on in the characters he played onscreen, Anton Yelchins parents have made a documentary that is about the real man behind the characters. Antons mother, Irina Yelchin, explained her and her husband's reasoning for making a documentary about their son, saying:

Maybe it was a selfish reason, because Anton, we just didnt want to let him go. He was gone, but everyone talked about him, and his movies were coming out still. Everyone was saying how brilliant and talented and smart and kind and tenderhearted he was. Maybe because of that. Maybe because he never left, truly.

Anton Yelchins parents, Irina and Viktor, seemingly made the documentary as a way to stay close to their son even after he is gone. They didnt want to let go, and as they told the Los Angeles Times, he is still present in their lives after his death. Anton Yelchin had multiple movies and projects come out posthumously, and his parents kept hearing people sing his praises.

That all made it feel like he never really left and was still a part of their lives. The documentary, which is called Love, Antosha, was seemingly a way to embrace that and keep it going by spending more time with their son. Antons mother said that maybe they made the documentary for selfish reasons, but I dont think many people would agree. Most would see their desire to honor their son as both incredibly sad and completely understandable.

The idea for the documentary actually came from Antons parents speaking with actor Jon Voight, who Anton Yelchin starred with in the 2015 film Court of Conscience. Antons parents were speaking with him about feeling that their lives were over and the Oscar-winning actor suggested that they make a documentary and live on to keep their sons memory alive.

The couple reached out to Anton Yelchins Star Trek director J.J. Abrams for advice and he suggested someone who actually knew Anton direct the film. They then contacted Antons Like Crazy director and close friend Drake Doremus. He felt too close to the subject to do it, but he suggested his friend, Garret Price, take on the documentary.

Because Garret Price did not know Anton Yelchin, the film can be more objective and dig into the good and the bad, and not just be a hagiography of the late actor. Love, Antosha will also touch on Anton Yelchins little-known struggle with cystic fibrosis. You can hear Garret Price speaking about Love, Antosha in the video below.

The documentary was a labor of love for Viktor and Irina Yelchin, who had to go through the painful process of looking through old home videos of Anton for the project. In their conversation with the Los Angeles Times, it is not clear that making the documentary helped assuage their pain, but they did indicate that they feel they did right by Anton.

Love, Antosha features interviews with some of the people Anton Yelchin worked with over the years, including J.J. Abrams, John Cho, Martin Landau, Jennifer Lawrence, Jodie Foster and Chris Pine. The documentary premieres at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28.

Justice Leagues Reshoots Reportedly Changed Cyborgs Story In A Major Way

For decades Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, was best known in the DC Comics mythology as a member of the Teen Titans, but when the New 52 launched in 2011, Cyborg's backstory was reimagined so that he was instead one of the founding Justice Leaguers. He filled that same role in Justice League last year, and along with fully introducing Ray Fisher's Cyborg following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie also brought back Victor's father, Dr. Silas Stone. Silas survived his encounter with Steppenwolf in Justice League, but apparently before the movie went through reshoots, the plan was for Silas to be killed.

This information comes from Vulture editor Kyle Buchanan, who stated that in an earlier cut of Justice League, Silas Stone was killed halfway through, presumably after he and the S.T.A.R. Labs personnel are kidnapped by Steppenwolf and his Parademon flunkies. At the end of Justice League, Cyborg finds a video of Silas, and his words are used to play over the final montage. But once the Justice League reshoots, which were overseen by Joss Whedon, went into effect, Silas was kept alive and his video message was taken out, with Amy Adams' Lois Lane delivering Justice League's final lines instead (excluding the post-credits scene).

It's no secret to anyone who paid close attention to Justice League's development that there were quite a few shakeups behind the scenes, particularly after director Zack Snyder departed and Joss Whedon, who had already been brought aboard for script rewrites, was tasked with seeing the movie to completion. This led to various story changes, though Silas Stone being kept alive is certainly one of the tamer alterations. Just like in the comics, Silas rebuilt Victor's damaged body after a car crash nearly killed him, only in the DCEU, Victor's robotic body was assembled by one of the three Mother Boxes left on Earth. When Steppenwolf arrived on Earth, Silas and other S.T.A.R. Labs scientists were taken because they'd been in contact with the Mother Box, but Cyborg, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash managed to get Silas and the other survivors away. By the end of Justice League, Silas and Victor seemed be on better terms, and Silas was shown helping Victor further explore his cybernetic abilities, which included redesigning his body.

Although a Cyborg movie was one of the first DCEU movies to be announced, a lot has changed with the franchise in the years since then, and now it's incredible unlikely that Cyborg will arrive in 2020 as previously announced. If/when Cyborg does get off the ground, Joe Morton is expected to reprise Silas Stone, and the actor has said that the solo movie will focus on the Stone family, the specific circumstances that led to Victor becoming Cyborg and Victor's life as a superhero who can't hide his true nature from the public. Considering that Victor has already lost his mother, it's probably for the best Justice League didn't go through with taking Silas off the table. Now Cyborg can take the next step on his heroic journey with his dad supporting him.

When Jason Momoa was announced as the DCEU's Aquaman, it gave fans an impression that the ruler of the Seven Seas was going to be a lot less comic book-y and a lot more badass. Best known for his portrayal of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, the decision to cast Momoa swims much further from the chipper blonde-haired superhero who rocks a bright orange and green scaly suit. But when director James Wan signed on to Aquaman, he knew exactly what he was getting into and wanted to feature the iconic seafaring superhero suit and all. With the release of Aquaman just under three months away, Wan has shared a brand new poster of the upcoming film, and it teases some of that green and orange. Check it out:

What a beautiful poster! The sneak peak of Aquaman's iconic suit has the hero in emerald green gloves and an orangey-gold suit as he holds up a sparkling trident. James Wan tweeted it out with a little rhyme that goes "A Son of the Land, A King of the Seas, He's the Protector of the Deep," along with announcing that something is arriving tomorrow (possibly a new trailer that will reveal his suit completely?) For longtime fans of the comic book character, this is an exciting teaser that promises them that a genuine Aquaman is swimming into theaters come December. Jason Mamoa's previous get-ups have included a muted green, brown and gold costume in his full Justice League appearance and a simple pair of denim jeans (worn underwater for some reason?) in the first poster released for Aquaman.

The DC superhero has long been a member of the Justice League, though he's also plagued with the most jokes and not given the same stature as Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman. James Wan and Jason Mamoa are hoping to change perceptions of the king of the seas with Aquaman while also telling a story of the hero that sticks to the source material. Based on the first footage within the first trailer, Aquaman looks to be taking a fun approach to the character, as Momoa delivers amusing quips while also bringing strength to the Aquaman name. The upcoming movie will be a unique underwater spectacle, including the beautiful sea creatures of the deep along with showcasing a city in the depths of the ocean.

While the DCEU had it start with muted portrayals of its iconic superheroes, the franchise seems to be taking note from the massive success of the MCU and breaking away from brooding installments. Following the blockbuster Wonder Woman, Aquaman will likely be taking a similar tone. The tide is coming to theaters on December 21.
