Why The Original Halloween Continuity Didnt Make Sense, According To Jamie Lee Curtis

Why The Original Halloween Continuity Didnt Make Sense, According To Jamie Lee Curtis

One of the most talked about elements of the new Halloween film from director David Gordon Green is its treatment of the franchise continuity. Rather than trying to build on the six Michael Myers stories told since the 1977 original, the choice was made to bin all those details and proceed with a direct sequel. It's a bit of a controversial choice among die-hard fans, but Jamie Lee Curtis recently explained why it was totally necessary.

We wouldn't have been able to make a 40-year sequel when you've given the sequel-ing to random people for the last 40 years - because there is no bible. There is no Halloween bible that those however many sequel filmmakers followed. Each one came up with their own wacky idea for the next movie. And so there was no continuity. It was scattershot, if anything, and didn't make any sense!

In the pre-Rob Zombie era of Halloween movies, Rick Rosenthal was the only director to make two of the sequels (Halloween II and Halloween: Resurrection), but the rest, as Jamie Lee Curtis points out, all had different writing and directing teams involved. As a result, the continuity was really all over the place - and Curtis had a front row seat. After all, she starred in three of them.

I had the immense pleasure of hopping on the phone with Jamie Lee Curtis last month to talk about her work in the new Halloween, but part of our talked dipped into her history with the franchise. While discussing the previous movies, including the ones she was involved in, she was quite blunt in recognizing their narrative shortcomings, but also made it clear that she understands there is still a lot of love out there for them:

There may be people who love any one of the numbers of Halloween at any time, and they the beauty of streaming is that they can watch any of them. Rinse and repeat; they can watch it over and over and over again. The clever choice [with this new film] was to omit any other movie except Halloween. But that was the clever choice here, because you can't tell a story of generational trauma except to go back to the original trauma.

And that it does. Based on a script by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, Halloween is set 40 years after the events of John Carpenter's original film, and finds Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode still trying to recover. She has spent decades just waiting for Michael Myers to break out and return, the 1978 experience ever haunting her and affecting all of her relationships, and she finally sees him again on Halloween night.

It can be said without hesitation that the new Halloween is the best Halloween sequel we've seen -- but if you think the treatment of the continuity is changing, think again. I followed up with Jamie Lee Curtis if there is a bible now currently being established, and she practically laughed at the question:

No! No. I don't think there is a bible in... you know, once in a while in a TV show you hear, and by the way, I've never worked on one of them, that you hear that the creator of the show really wrote a bible that said this is going to happen year one, this will happen to year two. This'll happen year three, and they stuck to it. I don't think anything is built that way. No, there is no bible.

Fans will be able to witness the showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers very soon, as Halloween will be hitting theaters everywhere on October 19th. You can buy tickets now, and be sure to stay tuned on CinemaBlend, as we have a whole lot more interview and feature content coming your way in the next few weeks.

How Captain America And Black Widow Will Be Different In Avengers 4

How Captain America And Black Widow Will Be Different In Avengers 4

Captain America and Black Widow have been through a lot together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've watched their relationship grow through several Marvel movies and now, they are two of the Avengers left standing following "the snap." Recently, directors Joe and Anthony Russo spoke about how Black Widow has evolved as a character over the course of the series, and Joe Russo revealed that the events of Avengers: Infinity War, combined with what she and Captain America have already been through together, is going to result in a pair of somewhat different characters than we're used to seeing. According to Joe Russo...

We've been fortunate enough to grow [Black Widow] over three films: Winter Soldier, Civil War and Infinity War. And in Winter Soldier, what we found so compelling about pairing her up with Captain America was that he is a service paragon of morality and she is a paragon of gray. But they've grown together, and I think when you find them in this movie and they've been the Secret Avengers for two years because they're being hunted by Ross and the government, they're like a tight-knit family now. Her, Sam Wilson, and Steve Rogers. It's hardened all of them in a way. You can't go on the run without it affecting you emotionally, so I think all of those characters, but specifically the ones who survived Infinity War, Cap and Natasha, you will see them with a much harder edge.

It's an interesting transition because, over the course of the MCU, we've watched Black Widow, who Joe Russo describes as a "paragon of gray" (can you be a paragon of a non-extreme?) be influenced by the other heroes around her, most notably Captain America, and go from being that morally ambiguous character to one that is more in line with the traditional view of the superhero. Now, the Russos' comments to Wired makes it sound like Captain America might be shifting more toward Black Widow's previous perspective. After being on the run together and now watching a bunch of their friends vanish, it sounds like Captain America may be feeling a little less like a paragon of morality. Steve Rogers has always been, not just the moral center of the MCU, but its heart as well. What does it mean if that heart has become cold?

One certainly expects the loss of half the life in the universe to have a profound impact on those that are left, but there's so much we don't know about how that will work in Avengers 4. Certainly, if Captain America and Black Widow have a harder edge to them they will be a formidable, and potentially dangerous foe to anybody standing in their way. Thanos better look out.

Jamie Lee Curtis Has Already Wrapped On Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis Has Already Wrapped On Halloween

It's an exciting time to be a horror fan. Rather than cheaply made money grabbers, the genre is in a bit of a renaissance at the moment. Many of the genre's most exciting projects come from Blumhouse Productions, with the acclaimed studio bringing projects like Get Out, Don't Breathe, and the Purge franchise to theaters. Blumhouse is now turning its head on classic horror, with the Halloween sequel that is currently in the midst of production. Fans are eager to see Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode once again go toe to toe with Michael Meyers, 40 years after their battle in the original Halloween movie. And surprisingly, it turns out that Curtis has already wrapped production as the OG scream queen. Check out her post revealing this news, and thanking all the folks who have been kind to her while filming in Charleston, South Carolina.

It looks like Jamie Lee Curtis really made a home when returning to the world of Haddonfield, Illinois. Of course, she was in a different state entirely, but that's not really the point.

The original Halloween movie wasn't filmed in Illinois either. John Carpenter's classic slasher was filmed in just 20 days on location in California. As such, some palm trees famously make it into the final cut of the film, despite not being native to Illinois. But considering the bare budget and scrappy way Halloween came about, this should come as no great surprise. The palm trees have since become a fan favorite point of contention for the classic movie.

While Jamie Lee Curtis has wrapped her role in Halloween, it's unclear if the overall film has finished shooting. Curtis seems to be narrating her own experience, rather than announcing that principal photography had wrapped. This may lead some to wonder how large Curtis' role is as Laurie Strode.

Indeed, the new Halloween movie does have two other Strode women to focus on. Laurie's daughter Karen and granddaughter Allyson are being played by Judy Greer and Andi Matichak respectively. The dynamic between the three women will no doubt be an important aspect of the film, and having more lead characters no doubt helped ease Curtis' schedule on the sequel.

After wrapping, Jamie Lee Curtis also posted an adorable photo with her onscreen family, complete with matching t-shirts.

How cute is that? I'm really hoping that the three actresses just accidentally wore these outfits one day, resulting in this adorable Strode Family Photo. But smart money also says it was Jamie Lee Curtis herself who got the girls together. She just has that kind of spirit.

Halloween will arrive in theaters October 19, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Two New Characters Revealed In The Frozen 2 Trailer

Two New Characters Revealed In The Frozen 2 Trailer

The first Frozen 2 trailer just came out, and in addition to some major snowflake clues, it appears we've also just met some new characters. At the very least, we got a good look at the new girl. The other character is more ... up in the air:

I'm not thinking it's Anna and Kristoff's kids, although anything is possible. There may be a reason for the close resemblance, though. At first glimpse, I thought maybe that girl was Princess Anna in new clothes. But no, that's someone else. Also, the boy flying up into the air -- at first I thought it was Kristoff, but no. This person is smaller.

Could it be a flashback to Anna and Elsa's parents? Maybe their mom had a wind/autumn power, the way Elsa has a frozen power? It feels like Frozen 2 has some unfinished business with the parents' story.

We do know at least two new characters are coming, and Kristen Bell (Anna) previously told CinemaBlend we'll be big fans:

One thing I will say, there are a couple new characters that you will fall in love with. That thing I feel like I can say safely.

Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) were cast to voice two new characters. Not saying those two characters were shown in this first trailer, but the stars will be playing new characters in Frozen 2, so expect to see and hear more about them. It wouldn't be surprising to meet other new characters as well.

That little autumn scene may fit with the theory about Frozen 2's snowflake poster representing the four seasons, with three other people having powers like Elsa's power of ice. She would basically represent winter -- with summer, spring, and fall represented by others.

Could this new character here be the autumn version of Elsa? It's too soon to say, since we're all still in speculation mode until Disney fills us in.

Some fans are already wondering if this new girl could be a love interest for Elsa, although it would be strange for her to date someone who looks so similar to her sister, no? There's been no confirmation on the Elsa girlfriend front, so we'll have to stay tuned to see what Disney decides to do.

Frozen 2 has yet to release an official synopsis, and the first teaser trailer was heavy on the tease. We don't even hear any characters' voices, we just hear the intense music and watch some darker-than-expected visuals. The whole thing ends with Anna drawing Kristoff's sword and slicing at something. It's getting real out there!

Clearly, Frozen 2 will be sending Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad), and Sven on a grand adventure, taking them into new lands, and possibly through other seasons. For now, here's everything we know so far about Frozen 2. Stay tuned for more details as the November 22 release date draws closer. Netflix And Other Streaming Services Can't Compete For The Big Prize At Cannes

Netflix And Other Streaming Services Can't Compete For The Big Prize At Cannes

It seems that a line is being drawn in the sand of late in regards to the original movies that can be found on streaming services. Companies like Netflix and Amazon are increasingly producing and distributing their own original films strictly for their services, which makes for a hairy situation when these films want to qualify for feature film awards consideration. Well, count the Cannes Film Festival as one body that is making its opinion on the matter quite clear. The festival has banned films from Netflix, Amazon and other streaming companies from the competition for the Palme d'Or.

This may seem rather drastic at first but to be clear, streaming services are not banned from the festival, those films will simply not be eligible to compete for the top prize. That means that the films can still be screened for festivalgoers but the Palme d'Or will be reserved for more traditional, theatrical releases. The rules for eligibility now state that a film must have a theatrical release in France to qualify, according to The Hollywood Reporter. I'm sure the streaming services were chasing awards at Cannes just like at the Oscars, but now there will be no potential story of a Netflix film winning the Palme d'Or.

This decision was not made in a vacuum either. There was quite the uproar last year when Netflix's Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories were allowed in to the festival, going against the rules that require the films submitted to have a theatrical release before a streaming one. Netflix attempted to get temporary permits for a short (less than a week) theatrical run to coincide with the streaming release, but France's laws didn't allow for it. It all worked out in a way since the two Netflix films didn't win any awards, but Cannes decided not to play with fire twice.

Whether streaming films should qualify for the same awards as theatrical releases has become quite the debate of late. Steven Spielberg recently weighed in, stating that he believes that hopping in to cinemas for a super short run is not enough to qualify a streaming movie for an Oscar and that films intended for streaming are TV movies and should be treated as such. Both the Cannes Film Festival and Steven Spielberg are champions of the more traditional movie model and the theatrical experience and they want to defend it.

Nevertheless, streaming movies are a reality of a changing industry and they cannot be ignored. Everyone will have different opinions on this but I think that Cannes struck the right balance here. Instead of banning streaming films from the festival entirely and ignoring a growing segment of the market, films from companies like Netflix and Amazon will still get to screen if they want to. That will allow for these films to still build positive buzz, just without the hypeworthy benefit of a potential Palme d'Or.

As is the case with most institutions, enacting change is often slower than the external realities that necessitate it. The film industry is still adjusting to the existence of streaming services and how it will all shake out is anyone's guess. Maybe we wind up with full integration where a Netflix movie can compete for Best Picture or the Palme d'Or, or maybe everything gets completely divided, with streaming movies getting their own awards and festivals, only time will tell.

Also of note, Cannes has also banned selfies on the red carpet this year in a real case of fighting a losing battle. Check out our guide to see all the original movies headed to Netflix this year and for all the latest in movies, tv movies and everything in between, keep it locked to CinemaBlend.
