That Luke Skywalker Lightsaber Auction Has Been Cancelled Due To Authenticity, And Mark Hamill Responded

It's no secret that Star Wars is one of the most popular film franchises of all time. George Lucas' space opera has spanned decades and generations of moviegoers, allowing the property to accrue a mass of fans since A New Hope arrived in 1977. And since the galaxy far, far away means so much to moviegoers, they're willing to shell out top dollar to take home props from the movies-- especially the original trilogy.

That's exactly what happened when an L.A. auction recently put up Luke Skywalker's blue lightsaber, which was reportedly used by the protagonist in A New Hope. The auction claimed it was one of five props designed by Roger Christian, although Mark Hamill wasn't sure about it's authenticity. And after warning fans against shelling out 20k for a prop that might be fake, the item has officially been removed from the auction.

When news of the lightsaber's removal from the auction became public, one of Mark Hamill's many Twitter fans if he was home laughing about the situation. While responding, Hamill was sure to take a jab at himself too, saying:

While seemingly reacting to news of the blue lightsaber's fate, Mark Hamill also revealed something that will shock most Star Wars fans out there: he doesn't even have a lightsaber at home. So while countless kids have taken up a toy saber and pretended to be Luke, it turns out that the man himself doesn't have the Jedi's legendary weapon on hand.

The lightsaber in question was going up for a whopping $200,000, so its authenticity is rather important. After all, who wants to shell out all that money for a fake? Mark Hamill was sure to warn the fandom about this possibility, and now it seems that the auction in question has taken his concerns seriously.

In fact, Profiles in History, the auction which was originally set to sell off the questionable lightsaber, has even released a statement about the lightsaber (via The Guardian). It reads:

In light of conflicting information regarding the origin of Roger Christian's lightsaber, Profiles in History has decided to withdraw the piece from this auction until Mr Christian can clear up the inconsistencies that have been brought to our attention.

It looks like the origin of the blue lightsaber is up for question-- especially who created it, and if it was truly used by Mark Hamill in A New Hope. The Star Wars actor has maintained that he's used a ton of lightsaber throughout the years, so it's tricky to nail down which one was used during the first film in the franchise. And now it seems the authenticity of the prop is going to be verified before it's sold at such a high cost.

Why Captain Marvel Fans Shouldn't Be Worried About Carol Danvers' Movie Costume

It's an exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is currently riding the wave of Black Panther's massive box office and critical success, and the future looks especially bright as well. The next installment in the MCU will be the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which will unite almost all of the main characters from the past 10 years of movies. Afterward, female heroes will finally get their day with Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel. The latter stars Brie Larson, and fans recently freaked out when set photos revealed the hero in a green suit. But it turns out they shouldn't worry, at least according to Visual Development Supervisor Andy Park. He recently said:

I think it's always funny seeing people's reaction... People are so ready to jump on and to react and make decisions so quickly. I would just say I would hope that they would just know from the past that judging too quickly is... How do I word this? They're going to be happy. I think they're going to be happy. I mean, Kevin Feige said it in an interview. We revealed the concept art that I did, myself and other artists did, of Captain Marvel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, so I mean, I think that alone should hopefully alleviate some of those fears that people have.

Without explicitly confirming it, it seems that Andy Park believes that the diehard comic fans are going to be happy with Captain Marvel's costume when she finally debut in the MCU. Translation: the red and blue suit is coming.

Andy Park's comments are sure to be a relief for the comic book purists out there. While superhero movies always make a ton of money at the box office, there are particular challenges that come with adapting the source material for the silver screen. One of these potential roadblocks is the sky high expectation of comics fans, who often judge how closely the movies adhere to the original pages. So when a photo of Carol Danvers was released with a green suit, the community blew up.

Now appears that the green Captain Marvel suit may only appear for a brief while, before she eventually finds the traditional red and blue. In his conversation with Comic Book, Andy Park cited the Captain Marvel concept art that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con this past year. That suit was the traditional red and blue, which Park specifically points to. The MCU knows the tradition of the character, and we should probably wait until Captain Marvel arrives before we begin ragging on its inaccuracy. If the MCU wasn't going the traditional route with the costume, they wouldn't have revealed the concept art for the look.

Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters March 6, 2019, although fans are hoping the character will debut in Avengers: Infinity War. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

On the surface, Thor and Black Panther don't look like they have that much in common. Sure they're both royalty and are skilled warriors, but one is a 1,000+ year old demigod who flies and can manipulate lightning, and the other wears a vibranium-woven catsuit and obtains his special abilities by ingesting a special herb. However, according to Black Panther producer Nate Moore, when Marvel Studios was developing T'Challa's solo movie, those involved took painstaking efforts to ensure that Wakanda, the African nation filled with advanced technology, didn't feel like Thor's homeworld of Asgard. Moore explained:

Our biggest fear, and one fear that Kevin articulated very early on was, he didn't want Wakanda to feel like Asgard. This sort of magical place that was of another world. He wanted it to feel like it could exist on Earth and I think Ryan went the extra mile with his team to make sure that all of the textures for clothing were grounded in stuff that actually was worn on the continent, that the design of the buildings were things that were inspired by things built on the continent, so if you were from Africa you would feel the textures that felt real.

Nate Moore makes a good point. Even though Wakanda is packed with technology that's decades/centuries ahead of its time, and the Wakandans did a good job of hiding the country's true nature from the world, it's still located on Earth. If the Black Panther team had tried to make Wakanda emulate Asgard from the Thor movies, it wouldn't have felt like this was a country that could be found in Africa, hence why it was necessary to include realistic elements within Wakanda, from the fashion to the architecture. With Asgard, it could look as fantastical and weird as the filmmakers wanted, but for Wakanda, it was important to honor the country being nestled in the heart of Africa. Continuing in his conversation with CinemaBlend's own Conner Schwerdtfeger about Black Panther's home release, Moore said:

It was something that was very much an homage to the beauty of culture in and around Africa. We would never claim that Wakanda is an encapsulation of all that is Africa, but what we did want to do was make sure we were getting it as right as we could and pulling as much as we could.

Our time with Agsard is over following its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok, but the realm's importance to the MCU shouldn't be understated, as it was the first extraterrestrial location we visited in this universe and opened the door to other cosmic corners for the franchise. But for Wakanda, Black Panther couldn't take that same alien culture-like route, and instead wisely stuck to the comic book source material and made T'Challa's home feel both unusual and familiar
