Rocketman Team And Elton John 'Reject' Decision To Censor Movie For Russian Market

The musical biopic celebrating Elton Johns rise to stardom and personal struggles has finally arrived to cinemas. However, at a screening of Rocketman in Moscow on Thursday, audiences missed out on the intended experience of the film, which was meant to shown an uninhibited and flashy approach to the musician's early life.

Scenes including gay sex and kissing in Rocketman were removed by the Russian distributor, sparking this response from Elton John and the filmmakers:

We reject in the strongest possible terms the decision to pander to local laws and censor Rocketman for the Russian market, a move we were unaware of until today. Paramount Pictures have been brave and bold partners in allowing us to create a film which is a true representation of Eltons extraordinary life, warts and all. That the local distributor has edited out certain scenes, denying the audience the opportunity to see the film as it was intended is a sad reflection of the divided world we still live in and how it can still be so cruelly unaccepting of the love between two people. We believe in building bridges and open dialogue, and will continue to push for the breaking down of barriers until all people are heard equally across the world.

Five minutes of footage was reportedly removed from the movie for Russian audiences, due to the countrys laws banning "homosexual propaganda." According to Variety, the filmmakers and Elton John had not been made aware of the censorship until Russian journalists reported the cut following the Moscow screening.

Paramount Pictures also released a separate statement about Rocketmans censorship:

We are incredibly proud of the movie that we made, which is told in the way that Elton John wanted his story to be depicted. We are releasing the film in its entirety around the world regardless of rating, but like all studios, we must adhere to local laws and requirements in certain territories in which the film is being shown.

The studio supported Elton Johns words, expressing that the movie will be released uncut across the globe. There is however one caveat: the studio must adhere to local laws, and in some regions those include the censorship of gay content. Will Paramount then continue to release Rocketman in foreign territories that will cut these scenes? This seems to be the case, otherwise the studio would have to pull Rocketman from a few foreign markets.

Those involved in the musical have been vocal about the movies approach to truthfully depict Elton Johns life, showing his drug use and gay sex scenes. When John originally set out to have his life told, he went through studios unwilling to back an R-rated Elton John biopic. The musician recently said I havent led a PG-13 rated life," so it never made sense to him for a movie about him to hold that rating.

Rumors previously swarmed about Paramounts pushback to cut a gay scene from the flick as well, but director Dexter Fletcher shot those rumors down, assuring the film has and always will be the no holds barred."

Bohemian Rhapsody recently dealt with a similar situation when it was released in China. Six sequences regarding Queen frontman Freddie Mercurys sexual identity were censored from the film, and that movie was PG-13 to begin with. Chinese film advocates spoke out about the censorship, saying it really affected the intended message of the movie about Mercury finding himself.

Rocketman has been met with positive reviews by critics and is expected to open behind Godzilla: King of the Monsters this weekend at $25 million.

The Harry Potter films certainly mean a lot to Tom Felton, but that doesn't mean he's made a point to actually watch them since they came out. The actor, who played Draco Malfoy in all eight movies, recently admitted that, while he saw each of the movies when they premiered he hasn't gone back to watch any of them since then. To be fair, he's got a pretty good reason for not seeing them. He plans to make his first re-watch the first viewing for some special people that don't actually exist yet, his kids. I have seen the Potter films during the premieres, but other than that no --- never! I'm saving that for a sacred day.I have visions of doing that with my two kids, when I'm a little bit older.

Tom Felton will certainly be a bit older, as People points out he doesn't have any kids yet, and thus he apparently won't be watching the Harry Potter movies again until the youngest one is old enough to sit through a movie, which means it will likely be the better part of a decade at least before Felton actually decides to show his kids what he was doing when he was there age.

It isn't all that surprising to learn that Tom Felton has never watched the Harry Potter movies since their premiere. On the one hand, a lot of actors never watch themselves, they just find the experience strange, and the fact that Felton was so young when he made the films, especially the first few, means watching them has to be even odder. Watching your ten-year-old self on the screen when you're eleven is one thing, doing it when you're 30 is something else entirely.

If you've waited this long, then seeing the movies with your kids sounds like a great way to reintroduce yourself to them down the road. Watching movies that they loved is something that many parents take great joy in. There will probably be a lot of very special viewings of the Harry Potter movies in the years to come as the generation that grew up watching them has kids and wants to show the series to them. The perspective is certainly different for Tom Felton, but the basic feeling is still the same.

One expects that, watching the Harry Potter movies with his kids, assuming the day comes, will be a pretty great experience. Kids almost always love every movie they see, which means they'll probably adore something like the Wizarding World films, especially the first couple, which are very family friendly and full of magic. Whether or not the kids actually believe the blonde-haired jerk is actually their dad is an open question. Whether or not they like their dad as much when they see what Draco Malfoy does to Harry Potter is also interesting to consider.

As any fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe knows, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films are basically treasure troves filled with all manner of fun, deep-cut Easter eggs for comic book fans. Even long after these movies have been released, fans are still poring over them with a magnifying glass looking for some small detail that everyone else has missed, and every once in a while, someone finds one. Another new Easter Egg has recently been found in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and confirmed by director James Gunn. Take a look:

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, along with Peter Quill, we learned that over time, Ego spread his seed across countless worlds in order to turn the entire galaxy into a living extension of himself. In order to activate the seeds, he needed another Celestial, so he impregnated innumerable women to produce a child that can tap into Celestial power. In this still from the movie, you can see Ego with someone who looks like Mantis. This Facebook post from James Gunn confirms that among those across the galaxy seduced by Ego was someone from Mantis' species.

When we met Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we learned that she was an orphan taken from her home planet and raised by Ego. She became something of a protg and servant to the living planet. The confirmation that Ego was with one of her species could lead us to a logical conclusion that Mantis is Ego's daughter and Peter Quill's half sister, and thus potentially capable of accessing Celestial power. That would be a major development and really elevate Mantis' role and importance moving forward. However, James Gunn notes that we don't need to infer anything else from this information, so perhaps this is just a case of coincidence and fans hurling themselves down the rabbit hole of speculation, and isn't some big secret. However, James Gunn's wording about fans not necessarily needing to infer more certainly allows for some wiggle room.

In confirmation of this Easter egg, James Gunn also notes that it is not THE Easter egg. The director has often teased that the original Guardians of the Galaxy film has a super secret Easter egg that has still not been found, nearly four full years after that film's release. As if fans didn't have enough homework, James Gunn also put another super secret Easter egg in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, although apparently, this is not that. So fans will have to rewind that tape another time and press play to continue the hunt.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is looking at a 2020 release date, so maybe by then we'll finally have unlocked all of the secrets of the first film. The backlog of unfound Easter eggs is getting overwhelming. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the only confirmed films of Phase 4, and James Gunn recently spoke about how different this third film will be. Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Just Unveiled New Footage, Check It Out

While many fans are excited to see the next Star Wars movie, some of us are even more excited to live our first Star Wars experience. That what we've been promised when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens at Disneyland and Walt Disney World later this year. While we've learned a lot about what things will happen when we first walk on the planet Batuu, we haven't actually seen what Black Spire Outpost will actually look like very much beyond concept art. However, some new footage was just dropped at Star Wars Celebration, and CinemaBlend has it. Check it out below.

In Star Wars movies, so much of what we see is never real. It's digital effects and movie magic. However, for Galaxy's Edge, everything is quite real. Everything from the rusted out landspeeder to the Millennium Falcon looks just as real as it does on the movie screen. In fact, some of the shots look almost identical the concept art that was released years ago, showing just how close to the mark Walt Disney Imagineering has come in trying to recreate the world of the galaxy, far, far away for us.

When music composed by John Williams is added, that's when it all really begins to feel like we're seeing a piece of Star Wars.

While there were no major reveals at the Disney Parks panel at Star Wars Celebration, like the opening date of the new land's second phase, the panel brought together all the pieces of information that we had in one place, expanding on details and confirming things that had previously only been rumor.

For people who are simply fans of Disneyland, Galaxy's Edge will offer all the things we expect from it, amazing attractions, delicious food, and cool merchandise, but for those of us that want to take the experience a step, or several steps, further, then there's going to be an immersive experience like nothing Star Wars fans have been able to be a part of before.

While the planet Batuu is a new place in the Star Wars galaxy for us, it's been around for as long as the stories that have been told. This means that if you look you'll see design elements that reference the prequels, the original trilogy, and the new trilogy as well. How Batuu experienced these events has helped shape the world that it is today. It used to be a well traveled planet, but is now on the edge of wild space, thus the look in the video that everything feels slightly rundown.

No doubt we're all waiting to live our own Star Wars experience. The day will come at Disneyland May 31, then on August 29 at Walt Disney World.
