Movie Theater Accidentally Shows R-Rated Horror Trailer Ahead Of Peter Rabbit

Movie trailers tend to fit the particular tone and style of the main attraction. Superhero movies often have blockbuster trailers ahead of them, and raunchy comedies will often show trailers for raunchy comedies. It's a smart business decision because it helps attract a specific audience to a particular movie, but one theater in Australia recently made a huge mistake by showing the trailer for A24's R-rated horror flick, Hereditary, ahead of a screening Peter Rabbit.

According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, families at an Event Cinemas theater in Perth, Australia were treated to a less-than-pleasant experience during the previews for a screening of Peter Rabbit. As the previews screened ahead of the movie, the theater in question accidentally showed a trailer for Hereditary, a movie that has become one of the horror genre's most highly-anticipated films of the coming year. As you could probably expect from a situation such as this, things quickly went south as children started to scream and cry, while the parents desperately tried to get the projectionist to turn off the trailer.

Of course, the staff of the movie theater did eventually step in and do something about the trailer. Customers in attendance reported that the staff was apologetic about the incident, and free movie passes were given out as a means of compensation for the error. Moreover, Event Cinemas has also stated that it's in the process of conducting an investigation of the incident in order to make sure that similar mistakes do not occur in future screenings of kids' movies.

Terrifying, right? Hereditary has quickly become one of the most notorious upcoming horror releases of 2018, with many drawing comparisons to The Exorcist. The film has received an R classification from the MPAA, and the trailer alone promises intense violence (a man is set on fire...) and numerous disturbing elements. We don't yet know exactly how scary the final cut of the A24 film will actually be when it finally debuts, but it's fairly obvious that it's not the type of movie that should be showing a trailer ahead of a screening of something like Peter Rabbit -- a film largely built on fun pop culture references and slapstick humor.

So, if you were screaming too much during the trailer to see the release date, Hereditary will premiere later this year on June 8. Make sure to check out the upcoming A24 horror film when it finally debuts on the big screen this summer, but please, leave the kids at home.

Last November, Benedict Cumberbatch followed in the footsteps of actors like Boris Karloff and Jim Carrey by bringing Dr. Seuss classic character, The Grinch, to life. Illuminations The Grinch marked the debut of the eponymous character in computer animation on the big screen, though naturally the movie stuck closely to the original book, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! As for why Cumberbatch was hired to voice the green-furred curmudgeon, The Grinch co-director Scott Mosier explained that the actors versatility made him the #1 candidate for the job almost from the get-go. As Mosier told CinemaBlend:

We had a list of people, but it's strangely like, I don't even remember a lot of the names. It was pretty unanimous and quick that Benedict rose to the surface. It wasn't a long process. We kind of did a list and his name is on there and everybody was like, Yeah, that feels right. We knew we wanted to go into his backstory and sort of go more in depth into his character emotionally. And we're like, you know, like he's funny, he can be rude and enjoyable in Sherlock. You know, he's just an incredible performer, and like I said, it happened really quickly. It was like, the name came up and then that was kind of it, and we all sort of jumped at it and it just kinda made sense.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Scott Mosier, who co-directed The Grinch with Yarrow Cheney, on the phone about the animated Christmas movie ahead of its Blu-ray/DVD release. When I inquired about if there were any other actors who were strong candidates to voice The Grinch, Mosier made it clear that even though some other names might have been considered, it didnt take long for him and the creative team to select Benedict Cumberbatch to star. The actors work on Sherlock showed them that he could hit all the emotional beats they wanted out of this version of Grinch.

Even though The Grinch stuck to its source material rather closely, just like the live action version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas! in 2000, this animated movie did take several creative liberties to ensure that this could be a feature-length tale. One of the ways this was accomplished was with how it delved into Grinchs backstory. This version of Grinch had been orphaned as a child, and his loneliness led to him shunning the Whos and despising Christmas, although just like in Dr. Seuss original tale, specific events lead to him changing his perspective on both.

With a $508.8 million worldwide haul, The Grinch has become the second highest-grossing Christmas-themed movie of all time, trailing only behind the classic Home Alone. Along with Benedict Cumberbatch, the movie featured the voice talents of Cameron Seely, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury and Pharrell Williams, among others. Id be remiss if I also didnt mention Grinch is just the latest pre-existing fictional character that Benedict Cumberbatch has gotten to put his stamp on, as along with Sherlock Holmes, he has also portrayed Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek Into Darkness, Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy, Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Shere Khan in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

The Grinch is now available for purchase on Digital HD, and the 4K Ultra HD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD copies hit shelves next Tuesday, February 5. If youre interested in learning what movies hit theaters this year, look through our 2019 release schedule.

Safran, however, believes that the smaller-scale spinoff is likely to arrive in theaters sooner than the grander direct sequel.
