The Boba Fett Movie Is Happening With Logans James Mangold
Since the Star Wars franchise moved over to Disney, not only has Lucasfilm been making more entries in the main saga, they've also been delivering standalone spinoffs. Rogue One kicked this off in 2016, and Solo is finally premiering tonight. As for what lays ahead, while there's been talk recently that Obi-Wan Kenobi could be the next Star Wars character to be spotlighted in one of these spinoffs, word has come in that a Boba Fett movie is in the works with Logan's James Mangold at the helm and writing the script.
According to THR, Lucasfilm is developing a number of Star Wars movies starring familiar faces, and now we count on director James Mangold to bring a theatrical Boba Fett-led story to life. Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg had previously been rumored to be working on a Boba Fett movie, but it's unclear if this is the same project that Mangold is now attached to or something different. In addition to directing Logan, Hugh Jackman's final movie playing Wolverine, Mangold's credits include Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day, The Wolverine and the upcoming Ford vs. Ferrari movie.
Years back, Boba Fett was reported to be one of the first releases in what was then known as Star Wars' Anthology lineup, and Fantastic Four's Josh Trank was attached to direct. Lucasfilm even had a teaser video ready to premiere at Star Wars Celebration 2015, but after Trank exited due to creative differences, the project was set aside, and it was decided that Solo: A Star Wars Story would be the second of these spinoffs. Now it looks like the Boba Fett movie is back on track, and James Mangold will be the one overseeing it. However, plot details are being kept under wraps, so it's unclear if this movie would be set in the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, sometime during the Original Trilogy or perhaps post-Return of the Jedi, with Boba having escaped the Sarlacc Pit, which is what happened in the now non-canon Expanded Universe.
What's also unclear if the Boba Fett movie will snag the 2020 release date that Lucasfilm already has blocked off for a Star Wars movie. Last year, it was reported that Billy Elliot's Stephen Daldry was in early talks to direct the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, and while Lucasfilm hasn't officially announce it yet, presumably it stands a good chance of moving forward, too. Regardless of when the Boba Fett movie arrives, this will be a good chance for us to learn more about the bounty hunter's adult life, something that's barely been explored in the official mythology set in a galaxy far, far away.
